Simple Antibiotics For Pneumonia Are Best To Avoid Super Bugs, Says Researcher
The study, by PhD research worker and Austin Health Infectious Diseases adviser, Dr Patrick Charles, shows that alone 5 per cent of people admitted to hospital with community-acquired pneumonia had infections caused by organisms that could not be successfully treated with penicillin combined with an "atypical" antibiotic such as doxycycline or erythromycin.
In the world's largest survey of its kind, Dr Charles studied almost 900 people admitted to sextet Australian hospitals over 28 months from 2004 to 2006.
Dr Charles' research analysed samples of blood, pee, sputum and viral swabs of the nose and throat taken from 885 patients at the Austin, Alfred, Monash and West Gippsland hospitals in Victoria, the Royal Perth Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.
He base that most cases of pneumonia were caused by easy to treat bacterium such as the diplococcus pneumoniae or Mycoplasma, or or else by respiratory viruses that do not require antibiotic drug therapy.
Only five per centime of cases were caused by organisms that would require more expensive and broad-spectrum antibiotics, and these cases were nearly all in patients who'd had frequent hospital admissions or were residents of nursing homes.
"The cogitation results show that electric current Australian guidelines for prescribing antibiotics for pneumonia ar appropriate,'' Dr Charles said.
"It shows that Australian doctors should resist the push which is occurring in some parts of the worldly concern - in particular the US - to prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics to handle essentially all possible causes."
Dr Charles aforementioned the trend towards broad-spectrum antibiotics was being goaded by laboratory-based studies of resistance rates in bacterium sent to the labs, rather than clinical studies of patients with pneumonia.
In the laboratory-based studies, the bacterial isolates often come from highly selected patients with more difficult to treat disease.
In addition, the fear of litigation made some doctors unnecessarily opt for more aggressive treatments.
However, the more than frequently these broad-spectrum antibiotics were victimized, the more likely it was that bacteria would be become resistant to them.
"The outgrowth of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens is one of the biggest threats to Australian health fear standards and is closely linked to the inappropriate use of antibiotics,'' Dr Charles said.
"By continuing to use more traditional antibiotics to treat most cases of pneumonia, Australian doctors canful limit or delay the emergence of more repellent strains of bacteria.
"By using the broad-spectrum antibiotics less often, we can as well prolong the effective lifetime of these drugs.
"Furthermore, in the US, Canada and some parts of Europe, they ar seeing some serious complications which seem to be related to the overutilization of some classes of broad-spectrum antibiotics that are frequently put-upon there to treat respiratory infections."
Dr Charles is a physician in Infectious Disease and General Medicine at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne. He is likewise an Honorary Lecturer in the University of Melbourne's Department of Medicine at the Hospital.
His study was recently published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases and he was conferred with a PhD for his research 27 August at the University of Melbourne.
He received funding from the independent 201CC Research Fund to complete the study.

Maarten Steinkamp confirms Sony BMG exit
LONDON -- Maarten Steinkamp, president of Continental Europe for Sony BMG, is leaving the company.
Although representatives for Sony BMG would not response to calls from Billboard, insiders confirmed speculation that has been circulating the pan-European industry in the past few days. Steinkamp subsequently confirmed his departure exclusively to Billboard.biz.
He says: "I am indeed stepping down as president of Continental Europe." Steinkamp declined to discuss his plans or the reasons behind the move.
A Sony BMG spokesman declined comment on Steinkamp's departure, or on rumblings that head of global marketing Richard Sanders was likely to rise in his absence.
A former journalist, Steinkamp had served with BMG for two decades, having joined BMG/Bertels in 1988. He has since worked in a multitude of international roles, including executive vp of BMG's ASEAN region, and heading up BMG International in New York before the record music company's joint-venture with Sony in 2004.
News of his departure comes on the heels of persisting reports that Bertelsmann's hierarchy are looking to sell-up its share in the Sony BMG JV. The joint venture agreement binding Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann is set to expire in August 2009.
The German media group's CEO Ostrowski recently upped the ante, when he said in March: "We might take over 100%, or sell our 50% to Sony so that they have 100% or we might continue the joint venture. All three outcomes are possible."

Don't have reservations about ticket price for "Three Hotels"
This week's local premiere of Jon Robin Baitz's play "Three Hotels" will be the first full production by the troupe Our American Theatre Company. And don't sweat the ticket cost: For all nine performances, you can pay whatever you want or are able to pay.
But the company's actors and other personnel are no fresh-out-of-school novices. They are professional Seattle theater veterans, eager to plumb the past century's deep pool of American playwriting.
Founded several years ago by local actor-director Susanna Burney, the company started off by producing public readings of plays by such major American dramatists as William Inge, Lillian Hellman and Sam Shepard.
"It started with my passion for American writing," says Burney. "I've always loved Eugene O'Neill, and I've always been fascinated by that whole American canon of classic plays. What I'm really curious about is how these plays, which rarely get done anymore, connect to us today."
With her cohorts, Burney has raised $10,000 to present this run of "Three Hotels," a triptych of monologues set in hotel rooms in Morocco, the Virgin Islands and Mexico. Performed by Todd Licea and Lisa Carswell, the work ponders the cross-currents of professional and personal accountability in the lives of an executive of a multinational baby-formula company and his wife.
Burney, the director of the 80-minute piece, really wants to underscore that if you have only a couple of bucks to toss in the show's collection jar, no sweat.
"I feel you should be able to go to plays and pay what you can afford," she says. "This is about lifting barriers. I'd rather have an audience of 40 people who paid $5 each to get in, than six who paid $30."

A longtime member of the pioneering German electronic social unit Tangerine Dream, keyboardist/composer Christopher Franke was born in Berlin on April 6, 1953, after studying classical music and composition at the Berlin Conservatory. While playing in the jazz-rock mathematical group Agitation Free, he and his mentor, Swiss van composer Thomas Kessler, set up a sound studio and began teaching courses in improvisation, egg laying the groundwork for what would turn the Berlin School of Electronic Music. Through the school, Franke met Edgar Froese and Peter Baumann, connection them in Tangerine Dream in 1970; he remained with the radical for nearly two decades, during that clip greatly expanding the parameters of electronic music through his contributions to landmark records including Zeit, Atem, and Phaedra as well as influential film soundtracks like Necromancer, Risky Business, and Legend. One of the first musicians to research the replete originative telescope of the synthesiser, Franke proved particularly groundbreaking in employing sequencers as percussion instruments, forging the dim, throb sound which became Tangerine Dream's earmark during the mid to late '70s. He left the mathematical group in 1988 to mount a solo career, subsiding in Los Angeles iI years later to prosecute film work on; in 1991, in addition to forming the Berlin Symphonic Film Orchestra (BSFO), Franke issued his debut solo album, Pacific Coast Highway. In 1993, he founded his have label, Sonic Images, after releasing several collections of his music for the syndicated sci-fi series Babylon 5 as comfortably as his continuing solo recordings. Three age later, Franke released Perry Rhodan Pax Terra which was followed in 1999 by Heroic.
